it’s probably a good exhibition to see on halloween; academy of tal r at the museum boijmans van beuningen. his work has an intriguing combination of colourful lightness and a hint of something sinister. from intimate drawings to the suspended ‘horse in pajamas’, the variety of mediums and techniques make the show entertaining enough for its size; the multifaceted and denser works are spaced well between other simpler elements not to overwhelm and give the required distance to view the larger pieces. from the room containing the graphic composite work ‘house of prince’, the drama of the installation of sculptures (complete with sound and shadow-play), and the narrow maze containing the posters of his ‘deaf institute’, it all reminds of life as a carnival of curiosity; a fitting show for all hallows’ eve from an artist who so convincingly connects the real and unreal.
