the work of martin jarrie strikes a very rare note within me. not only because of the relatable titles of his work but because he consciously undermines the superficial with his simple illustrations. like many others with this talent, his work is multi-layered enough to appeal to a wide audience and in fact carries a strong message about the human condition. jarrie’s humorous look at the everyday is expressed in a quasi-surreal way, but while he touches on important aspects of modern society without as much as a patronising stroke, looking through his library of publications, i’m struck at the amount of behavioural references and their emotive power. even when illustrating familiar fables, he manages to link them to the present in a way which is totally valid.
