sometimes ‘regression’ is not the complete opposite of ‘progression’ but merely a step in the process… i prefer to look at it as an evolution, which is not refinement but closer to a distillation of elements. all my encounters with ceramicists features that dichotomy of concentrated complexity which turns into an inexorable simplicity. dan mccarthy‘s work has always drawn from an inherent search for sincerity, his innocent near-outsider style has managed to evoke basic emotive issues and points to the simple similarities between us all. i recognise his choice of ceramics as medium as the strongest embodiment of all these aspects especially because of their near head size dimensions and their emoticon-esque expressions; my sentiments are especially drawn to the empty-head metaphor which these vases provoke and being a firm believer in the adage of ‘ignorance is bliss’ it all makes perfect sense.
