for centuries our collective iconographical memory of the male nude has remained firmly rooted in the classical. these images of prowess, strength and idealised the masculine physique has inspired many young artists including my latest favourite derek overfield. overfield’s departure might veer a bit too close to to the mythological but even that doesn’t detract from the sweeping sense of movement and action he creates in his work. the sketchy figure drawing element has an immediate animated presence which removes it from the statuesque of greek and roman; bringing an essence of contemporary intimacy to the viewer. in addition here derek’s concentration on the twisting torso may seem a limiting theme but then again the focus it provides succeeds in steering the voyeuristic impulse even further.
