i simply love the way artists have used the written word to emphasise the esteem of their subjects. since the late renaissance it’s been important to include an object or reference relevant to the person’s occupation or position in the picture but looking through modern magazines and seeing every so-and-so hugging his prize stallion or photographed in front of some lakeside property, probably means that our need to define ourselves has evolved little in the last five hundred years.
what interests me is how many paintings include books, scrolls, notes and other pieces of paper all bestowing their wisdom and literacy upon these darkly clad men. i suppose next time i have my portrait taken i should probably be holding up a mobile device…
