like opening a secret box of bejewelled curiorities is the work of myriam machita. her work is a stroke of vanitas with a liberal lashing of medieval magic. although my favourites being the embroidered pieces, her oeuvre includes bewitching sculptural ceramics and drawings amongst others. the ethos in her work is not unlike that of an anachronistic detective, combining clues to re-construct some sinister event or bizarre behaviour. the contrast of contemporary elements and historical elements are concurrent with her disparate constructions that take on a serious immediacy through their crude executions. an honesty prevails while elements of glamour interject to form a melange of a near-accidental nature. the anxiety and suspense that become part of this narrative is what draws the viewer into machita’s curious clues to modern mysteries.
