it doesn’t take much to see the connectivities in ed fairburn‘s portraits. his manipulations of maps, whether urban or rural, bring faces and places to life in an exceptional way. i am partial to his renditions of portraits in the landscape, the solid placing and accentuation of topography reminds the viewer of the undeniable connection to the landscape and each to their own personal place. in certain cases older maps function also as a place-time marker in a celebration of events past, like with the western front cut out series. his work on road and street maps accentuates the organic elements that are such an integral part of humanity; the city grids vs the veiny winding by-ways. there is also the mesmerizing allusion to traveling and dreaming that escapes from the imagery. the celestial maps convey that same ethereal dreaminess and altogether the subverted romanticism of the work contains a sensitive sentiment that i can totally identify with. The combination of maps as canvas and the embellished portraits gives not only interest but also a deeper dimension to the work; to me it evokes a nostalgia of places of importance which is probably why the paris city map is my favorite…
