the alchemy that is ceramics has been a part of my life for as long as i can remember. first introduced to me by my mother when i recall watching her at her wheel shaping the wet clay with a patience she never managed to have towards me or my brother. be that as it may, christina schou christensen re-awakens that alchemic awareness in the way she manipulates glazes in her ceramic work. though one can easily argue that any poly-plastic can be fashioned in the same way, it is the elemental allure of fire and earth that injects these objects with a more primitive and spiritual aspect. the magical moments of viscosity of melting temperatures and raw clay firing combines to bring her project ‘shaping fluids’ to life. the static moment achieved by this transformations reminds me of the unknown powers of the universe and the hidden knowledge of substances… something i still regard as an near-existential experience.
