i’ve never really been one for cottaging up the garden, i’m more of a foliage person… anyway who can even attempt it after gertrude jekyll, but i must admit i was greatly inspired by vita sackville-west’s epic sissinghurst event when i did the shade garden under the plane trees. the thing with space is, you still have to do something with it. i went for whites and creams since they seem to light up the shadows and in the african light seem too harshly bleached out in full sun. since i’m such also a gardening anomaly, loving gardens but not the soil under my nails, i opted for a clever low maintenance approach - after 5 years i must say the reward was worth the effort….
