frederik buyckx caught my eye after being awarded a honorable mention for daily life at the 2013 world press photo. although he has produced a myriad of captivating images for de standaard newspaper, i find his work featuring life from foreign locations particularly moving. the haunting scenes from favellas in brazil to streets in new delhi or rural pakistan have a misplaced quality that successfully adds to the transported experience. in a genre of photo-documentary that can easily slip into sentimentalism and sensation, frederik retains a distance which is not condescending or patronising but rather brings the viewer closer, evoking a sense of auto-objective realness. his works are powerful and mesmerizingly artful in their plainness; a refreshing alternative to the more manipulated and dramatized styles in contemporary photographic art.
