i’m not often inclined to comment too much on famous contemporary artists, mostly because every one has already said what needed to be said; about sarah lucas most probably more than is necessary, but i still feel the urge to highlight the more obvious elements of her work and expand it to what i deem as the greater force of her art. sarah lucas has in contrast to a lot of her britart compatriots remained relatively consistent. i have no doubt that the positioning of everyday objects re-contextualised has it’s reactionary moments and even the self deprecating humour lacing our domestic situations, could be construed as valid commentary for modern times. true, her installations with the figurative have often had some relationship with furnishings, so her recent range of utalitarian objects came as no surprise although its meaning is clearly beyond me. in viewing her work and the obvious analogies she expresses, recognising humanity and the human form in parts always claim the attention first but what strikes me from lucas’ work however, is the sub text of personalised relationships, most notably the uncomfortable one we have with our own body. to me this opposition to the multiple manicured looks and false identities which fashion promotes is a quite welcoming balance. of course seeking answers to identity is a prevalent theme in most figurative art, but in addition lucas brings a powerful argument for an acceptance of who and how we are, which is to me the greatest contribution of her oeuvre…
