dan hillier‘s illustrations may seem at first simply like altered engravings but to me they can conjure up all sorts of alternate versions of repressed victorian personality. like an explosion of hidden flamboyance or some animalistic desire, the portraits hint at the fascination with transformation that was so popular at the time; bram stoker’s dracula, dr jekyll & mr hyde, the picture of dorian gray etc. where the other side of the personality, freud’s id, comes to light. a marked affluence and exploration of psychology introduced new disturbances and deviants to society. in these images hillier typifies the role of the mask and its mystifying ability. this metamorphic quality of instinct over-ruled, though so soberly depicted in the illustrations, remain a strong reminder of the powerfully chaotic excitations seething within us all…
