of course it was the transparency that first drew me into the work of david oliviera… spacial dynamics evolve in a three dimensional way that he expresses with his sketchy wire sculptures.
the reference of classical form and shape fuses with an airiness that contrasts beautifully with the monolithic marble creations of bernini and michaelangelo. his work captured me with it’s lightness and volume; it occupies a space but while its trailing lines dissolve it only becomes a memory of the familiar… so magically matter is manipulated and cleverly presented to rake the viewer into a intra-realist dream of movement and illusion - the solid becomes fluid. his figurative work contain a strong melancholic element and the brilliant animal sculptures beautifully captures the menacing or tender qualities. even if the initial reaction is because of the skill and surprise, it is the ephemeral nature of the work that lingers like half-faded memories about to disappear or a thought about to spring to life. this half-completed-ness becomes a metaphor in his work which is married to the medium in an ironic un-forgetfulness. the dichotomy in the play on probabilities of the future and a faded past is to me the soul of the work and an unique expression of transience which lies very close to my heart…
