seeing wisteria inevitably reminds me of love in the suggestive and infinately layered plays of kabuki… the expressive poetic dance of japan performed by male actors only. a certain reverence descends on me when i watch it and the undeniably strong eastern sense of nature and awareness holds me captive. most memorable to me is the skillful dance of the wisteria maiden; fuji musume. an onnagata role; those female roles performed by men since 1629 with splendid costumes, the lover’s tale of unrequited love, and the graceful story telling dance.
