my romantic notions often pulls me in one direction whilst my modern affectations are pulling in opposition to them… a happy medium that i have found is my growing interest in primitive art. the simplicity spiced by spirituality seems to calm my conflicting sentiments. the native american bird-stone is a prime example of such elementary purity that i’ve found myself completely mesmerized by its smooth surfaces and its hidden meaning. like talismans from before thought existed, it seemed to have been a prolific object of ceremonial importance in its day, which is evident from the plentiful finds made throughout the 20th century especially at burial sites. made from various types of stone and polished to a radiance, these ornaments were probably used in a symbolic way and to me their beauty survived to admire; their simple bird like shapes invoking images of bird spirits and of the envy of their freedom…
