on a recent trip to italy (bologna, venice and roma), i started getting fixated with the idea of the lion motif. the use of it in architecture where its almost as prevalent as mary and jesus. i’m used to a very anglo-saxon lion (the benefit of living in an ex colony) these ones struck me because they are so different. almost sweet sometimes. from kind ones to mothering ones to the grotesque and menacing ones in st peter’s basilica. they’ve always been about a benign strength, force and bravery. beautiful and proud…it almost sounds like an ad in the personals, doesn’t it? yes, two please.
